Jeannie Marie Paterson is a Professor of Consumer Protection and Technology Law and founding co-Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics at the University of Melbourne.

Jeannie’s research and teaching expertise lies in the fields of contract, consumer protection law, data protection law and regulatory design for responsible AI. Much of her current work focuses on the regulatory and ethical challenges of misleading AI, including concerns around misrepresentation, misinformation and deep fake fraud. She is also interested in the realisation of normative values of fairness, transparency, and consent in law and regulation.

Jeannie is the co-author of the widely used text (with Professor Andrew Robertson) Principles of Contract Law, as well as work on consumer credit law, consumer law and AI law. She is frequently cited by courts, governments, and regulators in law-making and reform contexts. She is currently a member of the Australian Government’s temporary expert advisory committee on AI regulation (2024). Jeannie is a senior fellow at Melbourne Business School and a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. She holds a current practising certificate.
